A federal judge has sentenced a former West Virginia state corrections officer to 17½ years in prison for what a Charleston jury found to be his role in the death of a Beckley man incarcerated at a state regional jail in Raleigh County.

Chad Lester, 35, of Odd, Raleigh County was sentenced Thursday to 17½ years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release for his conviction in connection with the fatal 2022 assault of Quantez Burks, 37, and ensuing cover-up.

Kimberly Burks calls out West Virginia leaders at a Jan. 6, 2024, news conference at the Capitol in Charleston for what she and other advocates said was their lack of accountability for what has been a sharply rising inmate death count at state-run jails. Eight defendants who had been Southern Regional Jail and Correctional Facility corrections officers have pleaded guilty or been convicted in connection to the 2022 death of Burks’ son, Quantez Burks, at the jail.
