Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Jan. 15, 1929, but the federal and state holiday to observe his life and accomplishments as one of America’s most notable civil rights leaders is observed on the third Monday of January each year. This year’s observance takes place Monday.
Here is a list of events happening across the Kanawha Metro region to celebrate the civil rights leader, who was assassinated by James Earl Ray in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968.
Monday, 9:30 a.m.-noon: MLK Day celebration, Geary Auditorium, University of Charleston.
Monday, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.: MLK memorial service, , 140 School St., Oak Hill
Monday, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: MLK Jr. birthday celebration, MLK Jr. Community Center, 314 Donnally St., Charleston
Monday, 3 p.m.: The NAACP Huntington-Cabell Branch will host a march and program at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, 1647 Ninth Ave., Huntington.
Monday, times vary: As part of the national initiative, Faith in Action of the Greater Kanawha Valley will hold volunteer training sessions for people who want to work with FIAGKV to help seniors continue to live independently. Register at or call 304-881-7253.
