MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WV News) 鈥 Another game, another West Virginia loss.

That's 13 of the last 14 games.

This time it was to Texas, 82-81. Last time it was to Iowa State, 84-81.

Call it what you want.

Gut wrenching? Yes.

Heart stopping" Certainly.

Mind blowing? of course.

The losses are coming at you so fast, so furiously that we're all running out of organs.

And excuses.

Each game they blew a 10-point lead in the second half. Each game they had a late chance to win or tie.

And, in each game the final play went blooohy. First it was an inbounds play where no one did what they were supposed to do at Iowa State, which turned into a turnover.

"No one listened," Huggins said, having gone ballistic on his players after that game was flushed down the toilet. "I drew up the deal in Ames four times. That ought to be plenty."

This time they listened. The directions were clear. The play was good, it went to the right guy, Malik Curry. He got a good shot.

It bounced around.

It missed.

"I thought what we ran, I don't know how you can get a better shot. They're going to guard the basket," Huggins said.

Maybe, Huggins may have thought, they'd be looking for Taz Sherman, despite Curry's performance. But it couldn't be Sherman on this day."

So, it ended up being nothing more than one more trip down "Heart Attack Alley."

"I wanted to get Malik the shot because, quite frankly, he was our best offensive guy," Huggins explained of the play he drew up. "He can create a shot better and Taz (Sherman) had a tough day. He's entitled to it, because he's had many great days. "

For the second game in a row Curry was nearly unstoppable. he had 19 against Iowa State and against Texas he finished with a 成品人视频 high 27 points, making 7 of his first 14 shots.

The 15th wouldn't fall. There was one second left.

"We got what we wanted," Curry said. "That's a shot we got to make. That's going to haunt me, especially when we're in a draught. That's a shot I can't back. I felt like that was a good shot. It just didn't go in."

West immediately fouled Texas' Teddy Allen, who wound up with the rebound.

He had two shots coming at the other end. Allen missed the first one and Coach Chris Beard, called a time out to make sure nothing could go wrong with 1.9 seconds left.

It didn't. Allen missed the second, probably intentionally, and a last- ditch effort to get the ball down the court was futile.

Allen didn't miss much, thug. The brother of former Mountaineer Teddy Allen, who has played at five different schools including 成品人视频 finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

It was over. The crowd, which had had rabid and wild, left, but not without incident as a youngster fell over a railing while exiting. Unconfirmed reports say that he hit his head, a doctor in the crowd and EMTs arrived quickly but he was taken to a local hospital.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. 鈥 A large crowd awaits the Mountaineers and Longhorns when they meet at 2 p.m. Saturday at the 成品人视频 Coliseum.

Tickets for the contest, which is a True Blue game, are sold out. Those in attendance will hear a special violin rendition of the National Anthem performed by Master Gunnery Sergeant Peter Wilson, a 30-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a 1986 Morgantown High graduate who provided music to five U.S. Presidents from 1990-2020 as a member of 鈥淭he President鈥檚 Own鈥 United States Marine Band.

After Sergeant Wilson puts his bow away, West Virginia and Texas will meet on the basketball court for the second time this season.

UT took a 74-59 victory from the Mountaineers in Austin on Jan. 1, though 成品人视频 was without two key pieces in that contest as both Taz Sherman and Gabe Osabuohien were unable to make the trip after testing positive for COVID.

鈥淲e didn鈥檛 have our full team down there, which had a lot to do with it,鈥 explained 成品人视频 head coach Bob Huggins of the New Year鈥檚 Day loss at the Erwin Center, where West Virginia holds a 3-7 all-time record. The Mountaineers are 5-4 at the Coliseum against the 'Horns. 鈥淚f we play as hard as we did the other night (in an 84-81 loss at Iowa State), we鈥檒l be OK. We just have to be able to finish games.

鈥淲e鈥檒l have our chances.鈥

Without Sherman, who is currently second in the Big 12 in scoring with an average of 18.5 points per game, Jalen Bridges stepped up and provided 18 points for 成品人视频 in Austin. That equals the junior forward鈥檚 second-best performance of the season, though it wasn鈥檛 enough to overcome the strong start by the Longhorns, who raced out to a 39-20 first-half lead and never looked back.

Texas, which is currently ranked 20th in the country and holds a 20-8 overall record and a 9-6 mark in the Big 12, was led in its previous win over 成品人视频 by senior guard Marcus Carr, who had 20 points. Carr, who played at Minnesota last year and currently averages 11.0 points a game for the 'Horns, is one of six transfers on coach Chris Beard鈥檚 roster this season.

Among those half-dozen transfers is the team鈥檚 overall leading scorer and rebounder in 6-foot-6 senior Timmy Allen, who is averaging 11.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. The younger brother of former Mountaineer Teddy Allen, Timmy scored 1,323 points in his three previous seasons at Utah before transferring to Texas prior to the 2021-22 campaign.

鈥淭hey are a lot more cohesive now, I think, playing this long together,鈥 said 成品人视频鈥檚 coach of the Longhorns, who have spent the past 28 games blending returnees like Andrew Jones (11.2 ppg) and Courtney Ramey (9.2 ppg) with their many new additions. 鈥淛ust playing together for this amount of time, I think they鈥檙e going to get that way.鈥

West Virginia鈥檚 starting point guard, Kedrian Johnson, did not play Wednesday night at Iowa State as he was suffering the effects of bruised hips. His status for Saturday is still questionable, as Huggins said there鈥檚 no quick cure for Johnson鈥檚 aches and pains.

鈥淗e鈥檚 hurting, and he鈥檚 been hurting for a long time,鈥 explained 成品人视频鈥檚 coach. 鈥淲hen you鈥檙e that skinny and boney without much padding and consistently run into back screens and flare screens and on-ball screens 鈥 on-ball screens are the ones that really get you 鈥 you get sore. He鈥檚 sore and can hardly walk.鈥

Though the Mountaineers have lost 12 of their past 13 games and hold a 14-14 overall record and a 3-12 league mark with three regular-season games to go, Huggins said he鈥檚 going to continue to put what he believes is his best lineup on the floor.

鈥淚鈥檝e never done anything in my life that I haven鈥檛 tried to win at 鈥 in my life. From basketball to academics to the myriad of things my father threw at me, I鈥檝e always tried to win. I don鈥檛 know anything else.鈥

Huggins still hasn鈥檛 given up on taking that competitive spirit into the postseason, even though realistically West Virginia鈥檚 NCAA hopes now rest exclusively with winning the Big 12鈥檚 automatic berth by capturing the league tournament (March 9-12 in Kansas City). The NCAA Tournament isn鈥檛 the only postseason opportunity, though, as there are also the NIT, CBI and CIT.

鈥淚鈥檇 play all summer if we could,鈥 said 成品人视频鈥檚 coach. 鈥淚 think that鈥檚 how you get better. That鈥檚 why you call rookies rookies. They鈥檝e never experienced what the older guys have experienced.鈥
