George Washington rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on Monday to force extra innings then walked off South Charleston with a double by Sloan Graley for a 7-6 win in a Class AAAA Region 3 Section 1 softball matchup at John Adams Middle School.
Graley went 3 for 4 at the plate in the game with her RBI that scored Elizabeth Rogusky being her second of the game. Campbell Lunsford also drove in a pair of runs for the Patriots, who advanced to meet top seed St. Albans on Tuesday.
SC jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, only to watch as GW rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second.
With two runs in the third and another in the fourth the Black Eagles held a 6-4 lead until the sixth.
Sophie Frye led SC with two hits including a home run. She was 2 for 3 in the game with an RBI. Paetyn Hartwell was 1 for 5 with a double and three RBIs. Audrey Stevenson was 1 for 5 with a triple.
The Black Eagles will face the loser of the GW-SA matchup on Wednesday in the double-elimination tournament.
Baseball
HURRICANE 7, HUNTINGTON 0: Ryan Bowman pitched seven innings and allowed the Highlanders only one hit on Monday in a victory at Cook-Holbrook Field.
Bowman struck out seven for Hurricane and threw just 68 pitches to improve Hurricane to 20-5 on the season.
The offense for coach Brian Sutphin helped Bowman too by collecting seven hits, including doubles by Aiden Ocheltree, Bryson Shirkey and Weston Smith.
Smith drove in three to lead Hurricane and he went 2 for 3 at the plate. Griffin Dempsey drove in two and Brayden Hutchison drove in one.
Grady Franks had the lone hit in the game for Huntington (9-14).
Track and field
South Charleston’s Jateayah Davis took first place in the 200 meters on Saturday at the Erickson Invitational at Parkersburg’s Stadium Field.
Davis turned in a time of 28.24 to finish ahead of Tyler Consolidated’s Andi Fiber, who posted a time of 28.90. Addison Richardson (Williamstown) took third at 29.03.
Davis wasn’t the only Black Eagles competitor who performed well at the event. Roman Kellum finished second in the high jump with a leap of 5-10. Dylan Malolepszy of Ritchie County won the event at 6-2.
SC finished with 47 points in the boys team standings for sixth place out of 11 teams. The Black Eagles girls took ninth out of 10 teams with 24 points.
