A pair of 4-3 setbacks in the Class AAA semifinals on Thursday ended the tennis state tournament team competition for George Washington’s boys and girls clubs.
The Patriots boys were the No. 1 seed in their bracket before losing in the final match, a 7-5 tiebreaker, that gave No. 5 Woodrow Wilson the win. That defeat came moments before the No. 3 GW girls lost their final match in a bid to defeat No. 2 Morgantown at Schoenbaum Tennis Courts at the Kanawha City Community Center.
In the boys team championship, the Flying Eagles will meet the winner of No. 2 Hurricane, the defending Class AAA champion, and No. 3 Parkersburg, who were battling in the final series of matches at press time on the tournament’s opening day.
The Patriots’ defeat to Woodrow came in the third meeting between the two teams this season. The Flying Eagles won the regular-season contest, but GW struck back with a win against Woodrow in the region tournament.
“I always knew Woodrow would be tough,†Patriots boys coach Emily Thayer said.
GW’s girls won their first-round matchup with Woodrow, seeded at No. 7, 4-0 before meeting Morgantown, seeded No. 2 in the bracket.
The Mohigans then won two of the three doubles matches that compose the team competition to take a 2-1 advantage, leaving GW to fight back in the singles competition.
The Patriots’ Nadia Orcutt and Riya Jones won their singles matches to draw GW close. The deciding contest came down to a match point that went for the Mohigans.
Morgantown thus advanced to the girls title match opposite top-seeded Huntington.
The Highlanders advanced to the finals of the team bracket with a 4-0 win over No. 8 Jefferson and a defeat of No. 5 Wheeling Park, 4-0.
In the opening win of the day in Kanawha City, the Highlanders picked up an 8-0 win from the doubles team of Baby Jones and Olivia Akers over Jefferson’s top team of Gaby Smith and Lydia Hayes.
Lilah Hayes and Jules Leach added an 8-3 win, while the team of Izzy Dickerson and Grace Gustafson also won in straight sets. Jones also won a singles match over Smith 8-0 to give Huntington the win it needed to advance.
For good measure, however, the Highlanders also got a singles win from Leach, 8-1. Play in each match ends when a team wins its fourth singles or doubles match.
George Washington prevailed over No. 6 Parkersburg, 4-1.
The Big Reds doubles team of Baylee White and Camille Tatterson defeated the Patriots’ Anna Mitias and Leah Casto, 8-3, for their only point against the Patriots.
GW got 8-0 singles wins from Orcutt and Jones, and another 8-0 victory in their doubles match against Parkersburg. An 8-3 win by Olivia Weily rounded out the quarterfinal win.
In the semifinals, that put the Patriots against No. 2 Morgantown, a 4-0 winner over No. 7 Woodrow Wilson.
In boys Class AAA, GW defeated Wheeling Park 4-0 to advance to the semifinals against Woodrow.
Meanwhile, Class AA-A boys and girls matches were played at Charleston Catholic’s courts.
Each of the top four seeds in the boys brackets advanced, with only No. 4 Moorefield surrendering a point in a 4-1 win over No. 5 East Fairmont.
No. 1 Catholic and No. 2 Williamstown will meet in the final.
On the girls side, it was a similar situation.
No. 1 Logan advanced to the final by defeating No. 8 Herbert Hoover 4-0 to set up a matchup against archrival Chapmanville, the defending champion. The No. 4 Tigers defeated No. 5 Oak Glen 4-1 but lost to Logan in the semifinal.
That was the third time Logan and Chapmanville met this season, with Logan having won the regular-season match, 5-2, and the region tournament meeting, 4-3.
Logan will face No. 2 Williamstown in that final.
The singles and doubles tournaments are scheduled to begin on Friday and conclude on Saturday.
