MOVIE NIGHT: Zoology Zone Science Center hosts movie night from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Zoo, 3 Valley Park, in Hurricane. This week’s movie is “Leo,†Adam Sandler’s animated movie. Tickets are $7. Pizza, popcorn, drinks and donuts are provided. The movie is sponsored by Dunkin Donuts of Hurricane. Those attending are encouraged to bring a blanket and pillow.
NAMED: Three Putnam County residents were named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Concord University in Athens. They include Chloie Casto of Poca, Kimberly Dillman and Paige Webb, both of Eleanor. This designation is earned by full-time undergraduate students registered for a minimum of 12 credit hours and attaining a grade point average of 3.5 or above at the end of a semester. Congratulations to these three students.
“TWELFTH NIGHTâ€: Alban Arts Center presents Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night†event Friday-Sunday, Feb. 14-16, at Alban Arts Academy, 2121 Kanawha Terrace in St. Albans. WINNERS: Putnam County Schools hosted Middle School Division Math Field Day in late January at Winfield Middle School when school teams of three students in grades 6 through 8 competed for top honors and a chance to advance and represent the county in the upcoming regional level. Sixth-grade winners were Morgan Snodgrass, Poca Middle, first; Neo Nguyen, Winfield Middle, second; and Lucas Houdyschel, Hurricane Middle, third. Alternate was Ava Hendren of Winfield Middle. First- through third-place seventh-grade winners included Hunter Jones, Hurricane Middle; Jace Berry, Winfield Middle; and Marcus LeMasters, Hurricane Middle. Alternate was Riley Cook, George Washington Middle. The eighth-grade winners placing first through third were Blaise Liu, Hurricane Middle; Cruz Berry, Winfield Middle; Jackson Green, Hurricane Middle; and Will Samples, Hurricane Middle, as alternate. The new award category — team winner — was won by Hurricane Middle, first; Winfield Middle, second; and Poca Middle, third. The physical estimation winner was Viggo Lopez, Teays Valley Christian. The Regional Math Field Day is scheduled for Feb. 25 at the University of Charleston. Congratulations to these winners and best wishes for the upcoming competition.

CHUCKLE: A new captain became a leader of a company of soldiers. As he went about learning everything on how they did things, he found two soldiers guarding a bench. He asked his sergeants why they were guarding the bench, and they said the previous commander ordered it. He called the previous commander up, promoted to a major, asking why he did that, and the major said it’s because the previous commander ordered it. So, he called that commander, promoted to a lieutenant colonel asking why he ordered it, got the same answer it was ordered by the previous commander. The captain went through a song and dance a couple more times before he reached an old retired 4 star general. He politely called him up and asked him why he ordered his men to guard this bench that all the commanders since then have maintained the tradition. The old, retired General said, “Wait, is the paint still wet?â€
